Justin Rose has failed to repeat his heroics at Royal Birkdale as he missed the cut at The Open Championship.

Rose finished as the low amateur at the same event and same venue back in 1998, holing out spectacularly on the 18th to finish in a tie for fourth aged just 17.

But he fell short of merely making the cut this time around, posting scores of 75 and 68 to end his first two days on three-over.

Rose has now shared his disappointment at missing the cut at The Open Championship, although he has also expressed his delight at the treatment he received from the fans at Royal Birkdale.

Justin Rose amazed by ‘arm-tingling’ fan experience at The Open

Playing alongside Russell Henley and Viktor Hovland, Rose received a very warm reception from the supporters on the 18th hole.

Describing how much he wanted to enjoy and embrace the experience, and also say thanks to the fans, he noted: “Yeah, absolutely.

“I was trying to get out of my own head at that point and just enjoy the glorious walk that an Open Championship 18th hole is.

“The crowd surging me on, I could feel that they wanted it for me. I think just up 18, it was just about the warm reception.

“Obviously I think people often remember yesteryear, me walking up that hole at Birkdale, but I think obviously it’s a lot of appreciation for the career I’ve had since then, and I just really wanted to enjoy it with them.

“So yeah, it was sort of an arm-tingling experience walking up there, so I thank them for that. It was an amazing week. A good day but obviously an amazing week.”

Unfortunately those fans won’t get to cheer on the Englishman over the weekend, although home favorite Tommy Fleetwood is fortunately in contention for the title.

Justin Rose disappointed after missing the cut at The Open

Rose was able to bounce back from his tough start with a two-under 68 on Friday, but it wasn’t enough to make the one-over cut line.

Understandably, he was devastated after the result, saying of his immediate feelings: “Yeah, I think the overriding emotion is disappointment because I want it all.

“I want to play two more rounds. Not just I want to be in contention, I want to do all these things, want to win the tournament.

“I actually want to play two more rounds. The course is obviously fantastic, weather is incredible, and the crowd are a sensation out there.

“You know, it’s a really fun feeling Open Championship, this one, and yeah, not being able to enjoy two more rounds is kind of a feeling of disappointment.”

Very uncharacteristically, Rose carded just six birdies across his 36 holes, along with 22 pars, seven bogeys and one double bogey.

It means his search for a second major championship win must now continue until next year, with the 45-year-old having claimed his only success at the 2013 US Open.
