Clement Lenglet spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, and now he is on his way to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa from Barcelona.
Although Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly interested in bringing Clement Lenglet back to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window, it is Aston Villa who are on the verge of completing a deal with Barcelona for the 28-year-old central defender.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Villa have agreed a loan deal with La Liga champions Barcelona for Lenglet.
Sky Sports have claimed that the defender will undergo a medical at Villa on Thursday.
Sport has reported that Villa will pay 75% of Lenglet’s annual salary of €16 million (£265,000-a-week).
Earlier this month SPORT reported that Tottenham had agreed a three-year contract with Lenglet.
The report stated that the France international centre-back had a verbal agreement with Spurs.
However, Tottenham and Barcelona could not agree on a deal.
Darren Bent’s verdict on Aston Villa target Clement Lenglet
Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent was not impressed with Lenglet last season, but the talkSPORT pundit believes that the defender could flourish under Unai Emery at Villa.
Bent, who played for Villa as well, has noted that Emery is a manager the fans can trust to make the right signings and get the best out of them.
The pundit said about Lenglet on talkSPORT (4:52pm, August 30, 2023): “Is this the guy who was at Spurs? It didn’t really work for him.
“You know what it is? Whatever Unai Emery does, I just trust whatever he does, his recruitment.
“He is one of them managers, I am sitting and thinking, ‘Really?’ You know what? It makes sense that.”

Lenglet made 24 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League during his loan spell at Tottenham.
The 28-year-old also made six starts and one substitute appearance in the UEFA Champions League for Spurs last season, scoring one goal in the process.
Although Lenglet was not at his best for Spurs, he was not exactly bad either, and we are not surprised at all that the North London club tried to sign him this summer.
Emery is a very good judge of players, and Villa need(ed) a defender due to the injury to Tyrone Mings.
Lenglet is a very good defender with a wealth of experience, and we believe that he would be a success at Villa.
