Lee Dixon has taken to Twitter to defend Ben White, after one supporter claimed Cristian Romero is better than the £50m Arsenal man.

What’s the story?

Well, a Twitter page called All About Argentina attempted to belittle the Arsenal No.4 by comparing his statistics with the Spurs defender.

Interestingly, Romero’s statistics were superior to White’s, although Dixon aimed a dig at Tottenham when saying it’s because Spurs have to do more defending.

You can see the 57-year-old’s tweet in full below.

In our view, Dixon has a point.

Other aspects of defending aside from tackles and blocks, such as positional awareness, do not get picked up by the data collectors.

White could be an expert in reading the game, but statistics wise, he would get no credit for that, whereas someone more aggressive like Romero would seem to be incredible in terms of numbers.

Of course, the Argentine is a wonderful player, although the point is that statistics are not the be all and end all in football.

Arsenal and Tottenham both have stars of the future

Enough of the comparisons. It’s time to appreciate that Arsenal and Tottenham both have incredible defenders on their hands.

Romero and White have the potential to become two of the best centre-backs on the planet in a few years.

In truth, they’re already among the most impressive defenders in Europe, despite their youthfulness.

Romero is just 23, whereas White is only 24 years of age.

Of course, it can be fun to compare, although there’s no denying that both the Argentina international and the England international are phenomenal players.
