Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has raved about Odsonne Edouard in The Daily Record, and believes that the reported Arsenal and Newcastle United is going to the top just like Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk.

Sutton made the comments about Edouard while including the French striker and Liverpool star Van Dijk among the best players who have played for Celtic over the past nine seasons, with the Hoops winning all the league titles during that period.

Van Dijk was at Celtic from 2013 until 2015 before he moved to Southampton and eventually to Liverpool in 2018.

The Netherlands international centre-back won the Champions League with the Reds last season and is on the verge of clinching the Premier League title this campaign.

According to The Scottish Mail (print edition, page 131, May 17, 2020), Arsenal and Newcastle are interested in signing Edouard from Celtic in the summer transfer window.

Sutton wrote about Edouard in The Daily Record: “French striker is going to the very top just like van Dijk and he’s been sensational.

“The striker can do everything. He links the game, he makes runs, he creates and he is a quality finisher.

“Edouard really assumed the mantle of responsibility as Lennon chased the nine last season and delivered in emphatic style for his boss and team.”

Celtic stay

Given Edouard’s record for Celtic and his consistency in scoring goals, there is no surprise that Arsenal and Newcastle reportedly want him this summer.

However, with the Hoops aiming to win the Scottish Premiership title 10 years in a row in 2020-21, the Glasgow giants could decide to keep the 22-year-old at the club for one more season before cashing in on him.
