Glenn Murray has claimed on BBC Radio 5 Live that Sheffield Wednesday boss Tony Pulis’ tactics ‘aren’t pretty’ but they are ‘effective’ just like Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho’s.
Spurs are sitting top of the tree in England’s top-flight and they will be hoping they are still standing tall long before they take their Christmas trees down.
Following Tottenham’s win in the North London derby over the weekend, pundits, once again, opted to go down the route of seemingly questioning whether the players are enjoying Mourinho’s tactics.
Throughout his career, Mourinho has always preferred the clean sheet over the pretty, easy-on-the-eye football, hence why he has been so successful, as Murray compared the trophy-laden coach to relegation expert, Pulis.
“Spurs let them [Arsenal] have 70% possession,” said Murray. “I think the modern-day game is obsessed with stats in general.
“I mean, I played for a Tony Pulis team and he had no interest in having the ball. When we lost the ball in the opposition half. He would just scream at us to jog back to the halfway line.
“But it worked. It kept us in the Premier League for Crystal Palace. It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective. Just like Mourinho.”

If you are losing games, whether you are playing defensive football or conceding a lot of goals, the supporters of those clubs will always be unhappy.
But if you are winning, like Tottenham are doing under Mourinho, then most won’t care about how they are playing, and from a logical standpoint, the mood around the place will, of course, be more positive.
Everyone associated with Tottenham won’t care an ounce about how they are perceived outside of North London, as long as they are winning and Mourinho is building that platform towards a trophy.
