Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was announced that Lee Charnley had left his role as Managing Director at St James’ Park.
What’s the story?
Well, this is big news coming from Newcastle.
Charnley has acted as Managing Director for the past seven years, arguably overseeing the worst period in Newcastle’s history.
Overall, he has been working for the Magpies for the past 22 years.
Alongside Mike Ashley, the pair managed to turn a hugely successful football club into a mediocre outfit, who were twice relegated to the Championship under their guidance.
The pair also failed to show any emotion whatsoever – this was rarely more evident when they opted to release both Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez over the phone (Guardian).
They even got John Carver to do so on the same call, as he asked Taylor to pass the phone to Gutierrez!
Newcastle’s statement also mentioned that the formal recruitment process to appoint a new CEO has begun, with an announcement in due course.
Who could Newcastle hire to replace Lee Charnley?

With the formal recruitment process underway, there have been a few Technical Directors linked with the Newcastle vacancy.
According to The Telegraph, former Chelsea Director Michael Emenalo is the frontrunner for the job.
Marc Overmars and Frank McParland have also been mentioned, but it seems the Nigerian is leading the race.

Interestingly, The Telegraph added that Emenalo is a fan of Eddie Howe.
He was regarded as one of the best in his field while at Chelsea, so it would seemingly be a fantastic appointment by the Magpies.
For now, let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about Charnley’s exit…
