Atletico Madrid have no choice but to sell Matheus Cunha with the Brazil international’s father excited about an ‘extraordinary’ switch to Premier League strugglers Wolves, speaking to Globo Esporte.
With funds tight at the Wanda Metropolitano, a double-your-money offer for a forward who has only started two La Liga games all season is not one Atletico can really afford to turn down.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Cunha is set to join Wolverhampton Wanderers on an initial loan deal. Impress, however, and Wolves could sign the 23-year-old permanently for a fee in the region of £45 million. Good business, however slice it, as far as Atletico are concerned.

And Cunha’s father is certainly pleased to see the former RB Leipzig striker pack his bags and clear out his locker, having become the latest in a long line of high-profile forwards who struggled to make an impression under the hardest of footballing taskmasters.
Wolves are signing Matheus Cunha from Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid
“In that (Diego) Simeone system, there is no way any attacker can prosper. It’s very difficult,” Cunha’s father argues. “I think (the move to Wolves is) extraordinary for Matheus Cunha. I think it will be a challenge, but I look forward to it. (He joins) a good coach who has been calling him often. An international-level coach.
“We just hope that this challenge is successful.
“The offer appeared, and (Atletico) couldn’t say no. Maybe Atletico’s owner wanted him to stay, and the fans too. But they need to cash in.”
The presence of Julen Lopetegui in the Molineux hotseat appears to have been a key factor in Cunha’s decision to choose a relegation-threatened, bottom-of-the-table Wolves side over a host of other Premier League suitors. Arsenal, Leeds United and Everton, to name but three.
“Today I have to talk about him,” Lopetegui said on Friday.
“It’s clear he (Cunha) is going to be with us. (The deal) is going to happen once the market is open. Now, he’s going to be our player. But in the next matches we have to focus on the players that are here.”
