In the summer confusion reigned over the future of Leeds United defender Scott Wootton.

He became one of the most unpopular players at Leeds last season after a series of below-par performances – including an own goal against Watford in the FA Cup.

Then it turned out that an apparent contract extension handed to him at Leeds had not been finalised and he therefore became a free agent this summer – coming as a shock to the player and fans.

Wootton would undoubtedly have been hoping to prove Leeds fans and staff wrong with his next move and joined relegated Milton Keynes Dons on a free transfer.

It looked, at first, like he might be on to a winner.

He scored in his second game for the club, a winning goal against Rochdale in August.

Leeds fans were certainly shocked to see him performing so well at his new club. But soon enough, things took a turn for the unfortunate 25-year-old.

He was stretchered off in the 65th minute of the Football League Trophy game against Barnet. He had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and was ruled out of action for nine months.

At present, it looks as though Wootton will be playing no more football this season.

Last month his manager Robbie Neilson confirmed as much. He told the Milton Keynes Citizen that he had suffered setbacks and was not set to play again this season:

“He’s doing well, but he’s had a setback here and there.

“I would have liked to have him before the end of the season, but the main aim is that he’s ready for the first day of pre-season.”

Meanwhile, at Leeds, his replacement Luke Ayling has been a pillar of consistency as Leeds push for promotion.

His contract at MK Dons lasts until next summer, so he will hope to come back strong next season.

But at present, Leeds will have no regrets in his departure from Elland Road.
