Noel Whelan criticised Leeds United star Ezgjan Alioski on BBC Radio Leeds (7:32pm, November 28, 2020) for his miss against Everton on Saturday evening.
Alioski, who can operate as a left-back or as a winger, had a great chance to score during Leeds’s 1-0 win against Everton away from home at Goodison Park in the Premier League.
In the final minutes of the match, Mateusz Klich fed the North Macedonia international through on goal.
The 28-year-old – who cost Leeds £2 million in transfer fee when they signed him from Lugano in 2017, as reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post – had only Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to beat, but he put his short wide.
It would not have mattered if Alioski had put the ball in the back of the net, as the offside flag had gone up.
Former Leeds striker Whelan was following the match for BBC Radio Leeds, and while analysing the match, he criticised Alioski for the way he took his shot.
Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds (7:32pm, November 28, 2020): “That opportunity for Alioski was just bad technique. That should have been going across the goalkeeper, trying to be too smart and giving the eyes and go for the near post.
“I am very glad that the linesman put the flag up because just trying to be too clever there. Stick to your basics, you are in front of goal, you just have Jordan Pickford to beat, get it outside the post and bring it in.”
