Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that the new Newcastle United owners need to spend big money and not do things like Tottenham Hotspur did when they sold Gareth Bale.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that if Newcastle are to make it big, then the new owners need to spend good money on quality players.
The former Arsenal star has alluding to Spurs spending the money they got from selling winger Bale to Real Madrid on a number of players, including Roberto Soldado, Etienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches.
An investment group led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and also comprising PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, have taken over Newcastle from Mike Ashley.
Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “I wish I had a tenner for every time I’ve written about a Newcastle takeover, which has now been completed. I’d still be a few quid short of the Saudi royal family, but it’d be a start . . .
“The thing is, I’ve thought for years ‘Why doesn’t someone buy Newcastle and have a right good go at it?’ They sell out their ground even when there’s not very much to get excited about. It’s a proper club. They’ve been wallowing around in mediocrity for far too long.
“Buying £10m and £12m players doesn’t win anything these days – just ask Tottenham. They sold Gareth Bale and bought loads of players in that bracket. It just doesn’t work.
“But if the new owners decide to have a real go for it, then Newcastle might start to get the kind of side their long-suffering fans deserve.”

Staying positive
Newcastle now have very wealthy owners, and big things are about to happen at St. James’ Park.
Okay, there is FFP regulations, and it is also unlikely that the Magpies will bring in the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar anytime soon.
It will be a more gradual process, but we have seen what has happened at Manchester City.
City have invested in the team over the years and have made sensible decisions.
There is every reason for Newcastle fans to believe that the new owners will do something similar instead of bringing in sub-par players.
