Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the Daily Mail revealed that Everton’s bid for Sean Longstaff was worth just £1m.

What’s the story?

Well, that is insulting from Everton, and Newcastle have every right to be offended.

Longstaff finds himself out of contract in June, and Rafa Benitez is said to be a huge admirer of the 24-year-old.

However, the Toffees will have to try harder to reunite the pair, as Newcastle have rejected the derisory offer.

It comes just a few years after the Magpies quoted Manchester United £50m for their Academy graduate, so you can understand why a £1m offer was presumably laughed at (The Telegraph).

So far this season, Longstaff has been an important player for Newcastle, making 13 Premier League appearances with nine of those coming as starts.

Since Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce, the Newcastle No.36 has looked considerably better.

Newcastle must resist Everton advances for Sean Longstaff

In our view, Newcastle need to get Longstaff tied down to a new contract.

Admittedly, he may not be playing at an outstanding level on a weekly basis, and the Magpies could easily afford to replace him with a world class option.

However, as we’ve seen in the past when Queens Park Rangers and Fulham have thrown money at their squads, losing a bit of identity in the side can be costly.

Longstaff is a Geordie who loves Newcastle, so it would be worth keeping him around to ensure the Magpies don’t simply throw away those who care about the club in preference of potential mercenaries.

With a bit more time under Howe, we will hopefully see the composed midfielder show why he was once likened to Michael Carrick.

For now, let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about Everton’s £1m bid for Longstaff…
