Celtic had a bid for Harry Wilson rebuffed in the summer – but Liverpool are now willing to loan out the prolific winger.
Harry Wilson has still played more senior games for Wales than he has Premier League matches for Liverpool. The 20-year-old was labelled the new Gareth Bale or Ryan Giggs when becoming his country’s youngest ever international at the age of just 16 back in 2013.
However, Wilson has still not managed to force his way into Liverpool’s first-team with his only senior outing being a 25 minute cameo against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup in January.
This is despite some truly fantastic performances for The Reds’ reserve side in recent months. After netting 12 goals in 18 games for the Under-23s last season, a hat-trick in the 4-2 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur on Friday means he has started the new campaign in similar form with five in three.
Therefore, with Liverpool youth coach Neil Critchley confirming via the Liverpool Echo that Wilson could follow fellow Reds wingers Ryan Kent and Sheyi Ojo in leaving Anfield on loan in January, there should be no shortage of takers.
Best for all parties
Celtic were interested in May, per The Mirror, but Jurgen Klopp resisted any offers because he felt Wilson was ready for the first-team. After missing pre-season with an Achilles injury, however, the winger appears to have fallen down the pecking order again.
Therefore, a reunion with former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, who turned Manchester City wideman Patrick Roberts into a player of real star quality during an 18 month loan spell, makes perfect sense. Particularly when you consider how highly Klopp rates him.
“Harry Wilson is a wonderful young player, that’s how it is, in a few moments, I was impressed,” the German, who has reared countless young players in a storied managerial career, said in quotes reported by The Mirror after the Plymouth clash.
A short-term move to Celtic, then, would surely benefit all parties.
