Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has told the club’s official website what the Sheffield United bench told him about the first goal.
The Reds got the better of United 2-0 away from home in the Premier League on Sunday.
After a goalless first half, Curtis Jones put Liverpool in the lead in the 48th minute, and Roberto Firmino’s strike deflected off Kean Bryan and went into the back of the Blades’ goal in the 65th minute.
The goal from Jones was a bit controversial. There was a suggestion that the ball had gone out of play before Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed it, but a VAR check adjudged that it had not.
Liverpool manager Klopp has said that the United bench told him that it was not a goal because the ball had gone out.
Klopp told Liverpool’s official website: “So, we have to turn around with other goals and we stay on track for the first goal – Trent keeps the ball in the game and then Curtis finishes the situation off. I think Sheffield was stood still in that moment if I’m right.
“I didn’t celebrate because they have a better position than I have, so they probably know it’s out. On top of that, the bench of Sheffield said when they watched it on the screen, on the iPad, the ball was out. I thought, ‘OK, the ball was out.’ But then the ball was not out and it was a big surprise.”

Back in top-four race
The win against United was a much-needed one for Liverpool, who were struggling for points in the build-up to the game.
The result has enhanced the Reds’ chances of finishing in the Champions League places, and manager Klopp will now hope to build on the victory.
