Jurgen Klopp told Tuesday’s press conference – as per the Liverpool Echo – that Darwin Nunez can be “unplayable” at times and says the Uruguayan striker was so, against Rangers at Anfield. But the new signing needs more confidence.
Nunez, 23, joined Liverpool for a club-record fee in the summer from Benfica. He impressed in pre-season, scoring four goals against Leipzig – and then in the Community Shield against Manchester City. But he has struggled since then.
Just three goals in nine outings, and shown a straight red card for a headbutt on Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen, have clouded his Anfield start. But Nunez did find the back of the net against Arsenal on Sunday, despite the 3-2 loss.
Liverpool boss Klopp was asked about the South American star on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Scotland to take on Rangers in the Champions League. He praised Nunez but believes the striker needs confidence to shine.

“It’s important for him to be confident (after his goal). He had a lot of good moments v Rangers, in moments unplayable but big goalie saves. His performance was a positive, for sure,” Klopp said, as per the Liverpool Echo.
Klopp: Liverpool striker Nunez can be unplayable
Nunez really needs a run of goals. It was a neat finish against Arsenal on Sunday, his first goal in two months for the Reds. It comes after scoring on the opening day of the season against Fulham, after his Community Shield strike.
After a tricky start, and pre-season comparisons with Erling Haaland fading into the distance, his goal against the Gunners will be a real boost for his confidence. But the striker really needs a run of games in which he scores.
Starting, on Wednesday night. Liverpool are set for a hostile environment against Rangers at Ibrox, Steven Gerrard’s old side. But, they are the strong favourites despite injuries and recent form – and a Nunez goal would be a big help.
