Jurgen Klopp says he had doubts over 24-year-old Liverpool player

One of the players Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool signed in the summer transfer window was Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister moved to Liverpool from Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion.

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool paid Brighton an initial transfer fee of £35 million for Mac Allister.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been a regular for the Reds so far this season.

Mac Allister, who won the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina, has given one assist in seven Premier League matches for Liverpool this season.

The Liverpool no. 10 has also made two substitute appearances in the UEFA Europa League for the Merseyside club this campaign.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been hugely impressed by Mac Allister.

Klopp has added that initially, he was not sure if Mac Allister would be able to play as the number 6 in the team.

The German told Liverpool’s official website when asked about finding Mac Allister’s ‘best position’: “No, we didn’t even look for his best position yet, we just use him. He’s a fantastic player. 

“I love everything about him, super-smart, tactically and off the pitch as well. So that’s really, really nice to work with him. 

“If we as a team defend well, he can play definitely the six, definitely.

“Did I know that before? I had a guess, but I was not sure because I didn’t know exactly how all the other boys will do defending and because we defend more compact and better than we did in our bad phases last year.

“We have small spaces and then it’s really, really good because he sees the situations really well, and from there we have an extra footballer on the pitch and it’s really cool.

“But best position, he’s too young for me to know it already, he’s a midfielder, I can tell you that, he’s a midfielder – and I’m happy about having him.”

My View: Alexis Mac Allister will star for Liverpool for years

In my opinion, Alexis Mac Allister will star for Liverpool for years to come.

I think that the 24-year-old’s ability to play in a number of positions will enable him to become a top player for the Reds.

These days we tend to ‘compartmentalise’ midfielders.

Mac Allister is a player who could become someone who can play various roles in midfield and be good at them.

The Argentina international is still only 24 now.

So, he could add facets to his game and understand different roles in midfield.
