Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has told Sky Sports that he is confident that Georginio Wijnaldum will be committed even if he leaves at the end of the season.

Wijnaldum has been on the books of Liverpool since the summer of 2016 when he joined from Newcastle United for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £25 million.

The Netherlands international midfielder has established himself as an important player for the Reds, but the 30-year-old is out of contract at the defending Premier League champions in the summer of 2021.

Klopp has said that he has no worries regarding the commitment of Wijnaldum to the team.

The German has used the example of Emre Can to make his point. The 26-year-old Germany international, now at Borussia Dortmund, left Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2018 for Italian giants Juventus.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “It is no problem. We’ve had situations like this before – with Emre Can for example. He played and he gave his absolute everything until the last day of his contract and Gini will do the same, no doubt about that.

“No harm to our relationship forever. Gini is one of the best people I have ever met and he is one of the best players I’ve ever trained and he is an outstanding person so there is no issue, no issue at all. We are professionals. Our relationship didn’t change at all over the years – it improved obviously.

“We’ve won one or two things together, we know each other better. I’m interested in his life, he’s interested in my life, that is how it is, mine is not so spectacular really – but that is the truth.”

Liverpool stay

Wijnaldum may be 30 years of age, but he remains at the top of his game, and it would make sense for Liverpool to reach an agreement with him over a new contract.

According to WhoScored, the Dutchman has made eight starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League and has made three starts and one substitute appearance in the Champions League for the Reds so far this season.
