Aston Villa came so close to getting a positive result against Liverpool at the weekend.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has told the Liverpool Echo that he was impressed with Aston Villa’s set pieces at the weekend.

Villa gave Liverpool a real scare on Saturday, although the Reds did eventually come up out on top in the clash.

Villa took the lead in the first-half of the contest, when Trezeguet escaped at the back post, to fire home from a free-kick.

And Klopp was impressed by the quality of delivery Villa put in from dead ball situations.

“100% v Villa I wasn’t sure we would score, but I knew we would try. Late goals v Spurs, Man Utd, Villa, it is important,” Klopp said.

“I don’t care, we have to win but I don’t expect perfection. We usually defend set-pieces very well but we accept Villa did well.”

Villa defended their lead brilliantly after Trezeguet put them in front, but Liverpool eventually wore them down.

Andy Robertson struck an equaliser with just minutes of normal time left, before Sadio Mane flicked home the winner in injury time.

It showed Liverpool’s amazing powers of recovery, but Villa still must take heart from the fact that they troubled the league leaders so much.

Dean Smith’s side are currently in 16th place in the Premier League table, having taken 11 points from their first 11 league games back in the top flight.
