Back in 2021, it was said that Liverpool and Manchester City wanted to bring Kilmarnock wonderkid Charlie McArthur to the Premier League.

Presumably, Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola kept tabs on the 17-year-old after he remained in Scotland during the January window, but now, Newcastle have beaten them to his signature.

What’s the story?

Well, the Magpies announced the signing of McArthur yesterday, and the teenager will go straight into the Under-18 setup on Tyneside.

The Scottish prodigy captained the Scotland Under-17 side at this summer’s UEFA European Championships, and was also named Academy Rising Star of the Year while at Kilmarnock.

Despite his age, McArthur has achieved a lot in football, and it speaks volumes that a number of Premier League giants were monitoring his performances.

To have managers like Klopp and Guardiola keeping tabs on him speaks volumes, so Newcastle fans should be very excited about beating the Reds and the Citizens to the wonderkid.

Newcastle can match Liverpool & Manchester City

We’re not expecting Eddie Howe to push Klopp and Guardiola for the Premier League title next season, although this news is certainly interesting to us.

In our view, there is no way that a talent like McArthur would’ve joined Newcastle last year, during the dark days of Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce.

For example, how many youngsters were given chances under Bruce? Very few, and even Matty Longstaff, one who did impress after breaking through, was then left to rot on the sidelines.

However, the Magpies are clearly a very different proposition nowadays, who have put foundations in place to convince young prospects that Tyneside is the best place for their development.

We may not see much of McArthur in the first-team anytime soon, but even still, his arrival at St James’ Park should give the Toon Army encouragement that they are heading in the right direction.
