There could be a change in the Liverpool dugout next season, but it doesn’t look like Jurgen Klopp will be coming back.
Arne Slot’s position is looking increasingly shaky, and there’s already a growing list of managers linked with the job. Xabi Alonso is the name most often mentioned, but he’s far from the only one being discussed.
Some supporters haven’t ruled out a Klopp comeback, but his recent comments on returning to management don’t offer much hope.
Klopp’s enjoying life away from the touchline
It was an emotional farewell when the German left 18 months ago. After nearly nine years at Anfield, he decided it was time to step down.
And despite some talk linking Klopp to Real Madrid, he’s made it clear that he’s not interested in taking any new jobs right now.
“Since I stopped at Liverpool, I haven’t had any contact with Real Madrid – not even once,” Klopp told RTL Sport. “And that isn’t necessary, because I enjoy what I’m doing right now so much that I’m not sitting around waiting for something to come along that might be ‘better.’
“And I have to say: even though I work a lot, I really enjoy this new sense of self-determination. I can actually say, for example, that if I’m not there sometimes — and as a coach you can’t do that, because the matchdays are scheduled and you always have to be there — and not just be there, but be there 100%.
“And the fact that it isn’t like that for me at the moment, I’m really enjoying it. It’s nice to be able to say that.”
Jurgen Klopp’s return to Liverpool is unlikely
While the idea of Klopp returning is certainly an exciting one for Liverpool fans, it seems more wishful thinking than reality at this point. He’s made it clear he has no interest in the job right now.
Liverpool could still approach him, but that doesn’t seem likely. The club is focused on building its future under Arne Slot, and any move for a new manager would be a big decision.
Liverpool have only brought back a former manager once before. Kenny Dalglish returned 20 years after his first spell, and while successful early on, the second stint was short-lived.
They might make an exception for one of the all-time greats to take charge at Anfield. Not now, but maybe in the future?
