Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s start, injury update, Swansea trip and Sakho’s return

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp addressed the media ahead of his side’s trip to Swansea City in the Premier League

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that it is important for his side to build on their good start to the season, and has warned there is a long way to go at his press conference, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, and will go in search of their fourth consecutive when they take on Swansea City on Saturday lunchtime.

He was quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying: “In this part of the season you create a base for the rest of the season.

“It is too early to talk about the games gone. Christmas will come, the weather will change, in this moment everything is okay but we need to stay fit and have luck with injuries. It’s better to have a good start but we have to build on it.”

A win at Swansea could take the Reds second this weekend, but Klopp is wary of Swansea City, especially after being beaten 3-1 on his previous visit to the Liberty Stadium at the back end of last season.

The Swans have not had the best of times this season, only picking up the four points which currently leaves them in 17th place, but Klopp feels they have played better than their points tally suggests.

He added: “We will be prepared for this game. We know about the quality of Swansea. We lost there last year after coming back from Villarreal (in the Europa League).

“They have played better than having four points looks like. They have different options with their style of play.”

On the injury front, Divock Origi is a doubt for Saturday’s match because of a foot injury he picked up in training but everyone else seems to have come through the week unscathed.

Klopp added: “Not too much news. It’s a normal training week with a couple of little things here, little things there.

“Divock had a little knock on his foot, but in the end it’s nothing major, but maybe it is a little bit of too short a period for the game.”

Mamadou Sakho featured for the under-23 side against Wolfsburg last night. It looked as if his future was bleak at Anfield after an outburst on Snapchat last week, but Klopp seems pretty keen to move on from the situation – and has urged all of his players to work hard.

He continued: “That’s not a rule for Mamadou Sakho, it’s a rule for every player. Work hard and do your best. I spoke to Mama and from my side everything is done and now we can carry on.”
