Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has told the club’s official website that Joe Gomez was “sensational” against Everton on Saturday afternoon.
Klopp believes that Gomez dealt well with the threat of Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the Premier League game.
The 23-year-old central defender did not start the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, but the England international came on as a substitute in the 11th minute after Virgil van Dijk suffered an injury.
Klopp told Liverpool’s official website: “Joe Gomez played a sensational game. I think everybody thought, ‘Chip the long balls, Calvert-Lewin.’ Gomez dealt outstanding with it. I liked it a lot. Good game, same old result.”
Encouraging performance from Joe Gomez
Gomez has not been in great form for Liverpool this season, and it must have been a disappointment for him not to start the Merseyside derby.
However, the 23-year-old gave a good account of himself after coming on as a substitute and showed manager Jurgen Klopp that he can rely on him.
The centre-back looked solid at the back and did his job decently enough.
According to WhoScored, the youngster had a pass accuracy of 83.3%, won four headers, took 48 touches, and made four clearances.
It was a controversial derby that ended in a 2-2 draw, and Jordan Henderson had an injury-time goal for Liverpool ruled out.
