The Liverpool number one was replaced by Simon Mignolet for the trip to Middlesbrough.

Quoted by the Daily Star, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says it was easy to drop Loris Karius for the game against Middlesbrough.

Karius arrived at Anfield in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked for a replacement for Simon Mignolet.

The German has since established himself as the number one at the club but questions remain about whether he is the long-term solution to their goalkeeper issues.

Recent weeks have seen him come in for criticism after a mistake in a loss to Bournemouth and then failure to keep out a Dimitri Payet free kick in a draw with West Ham.

He was subsequently dropped for the game against Middlesbrough and Klopp says that decision was an easy one to make.

“It was a lot of talk around this position over the last few weeks,” the Daily Star quotes him saying.

“There’s absolutely no reason for pushing Loris [Karius] through the situation because he is a much better goalkeeper than he showed in the last game or whatever.

“Even though it’s a long-term project, you have no reason to push it – especially when you have a goalkeeper like Simon [Mignolet] who is training at an outstanding high level. That was then an easy decision.”

It will be interesting to see if Karius remains on the Liverpool bench for the remainder of the season.

He has struggled in recent weeks and the decision to take him out of the firing line is a smart one from Jurgen Klopp.

However, he is still the German’s number one choice between the sticks and it remains to be seen how long he leaves Karius out of the team before electing to bring him back in.
