Liverpool are not competing in Europe this season.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted to the Mirror that their lack of European football is not an advantage for them this season.
The Reds failed to secure European football this season by finishing eighth in the table last year.
At the time that was viewed as a disappointment with the Reds determined to be competing in Europe on a more regular basis, especially in the Champions League.
However, that opinion has quickly changed this season, with fans and pundits alike believing that their absence could be a major advantage over the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
It seems that the Liverpool manager does not agree with that assessment, though.
“Everyone talks about this but I think 80 to 90 percent of the time in Europe, the teams becoming champions are in the Champions League,” he told the Mirror.
“Sometimes it’s an advantage, but in the end, why does a team win the league with all these intense games in midweek? Maybe they find an answer.”
It remains to be seen if Liverpool’s lack of European football does end up being an advantage for them this year.
It has been in the past, with their absence from Europe playing a major part in their title push back in the 2013/14 campaign, when they finished just two points behind eventual champions Manchester City.
That was the closest they have been to the title since 2008 and they will be hoping that the extra rest time they can enjoy will have a similar effect this season.
