Liverpool boss defends oft criticises left-back.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stuck up for defender Alberto Moreno and says the Spaniard is back competing at a high level.

Moreno has recently lost his place to Andrew Robertson but Klopp says he is not ready to discard the former Sevilla defender.

The German manager says he believes Moreno is stronger than ever and that he has been unfairly criticised in the past, with Klopp feeling the comments have been over the top.

He told Liverpool’s official website: “The way people talk about Alberto Moreno, I hope it has settled a little bit but it was never fair, that’s just how it is.

“If you see Alberto Moreno training, there’s nobody in the squad has a shadow of a doubt about him quality-wise.

“He’s an unbelievably strong player and he didn’t deliver all the time, that’s true, but at the beginning of the season he was so strong for us. There was one game where he dropped and everybody was saying it was exactly like it was before.”

Klopp is very happy with the performances of Andrew Robertson, who starred in the Champions League at left-back in midweek and was particularly impressive last month in a 4-3 win over Manchester City.

But he insists he needs both of his left-backs and wants Moreno to push and battle for his place.

Klopp added: “Now Alberto has to fight, no doubt about that, but we need two left-backs, we cannot go into the season with one.”
