Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Fabinho might be making his return to the Liverpool squad tomorrow.
The big Brazilian powerhouse has arguably been the Reds’ most reliable player in a season where circumstance has required him to play in an unfamiliar centre-back role due to injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, neither of whom have played since October.
But Fabinho has been victimised by Liverpool’s unprecedented injury crisis for central defenders this season too, and has been out of action since the defeat by Manchester City a month ago.
That in itself was the former Monaco star’s first game back but it appears as if his recovery was rushed a tad, given that he wound up spending the following four weeks on the sidelines.
Liverpool have suffered in a major way without Fabinho in defence but, speaking ahead of Thursday’s clash with Chelsea at Anfield, Klopp confirmed that the big midfielder is ‘for sure’ ready to come back into the squad.
He told a press conference, via The Echo: “Fabinho has 5/6 sessions in his legs. Ready for the squad, for sure.”
This is an enormous boost for the reigning Premier League champions.
Klopp’s side won’t be retaining their title come May because they’re 22 points behind top-of-the-table Manchester City.
But they’re only two points behind West Ham in the race for Champions League qualification and getting a player like Fabinho back into the squad is a massive piece of good news, at just the right time.
