Jurgen Klopp has praised Liverpool fans for their treatment of Loris Karius on Saturday.

The Reds kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 7-0 demolition away to Chester.

But there was a number of interesting subplots to the game, which was also Naby Keita and Fabinho’s debut following their summer arrivals.

However, the most intriguing aspect was to see how fans of the Anfield club reacted to Karius’s participation.

It was the German goalkeeper’s first game for Liverpool since his shocker in the Champions League final back in May, where two glaring errors contributed to Klopp’s side losing 3-1 to Real Madrid.

However, the 25-year-old, who made one brilliant save during his 45-minute stint, was given a standing ovation by Liverpool supporters prior to kickoff – a gesture which Klopp claims was “very nice”.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m not sure if I should have expected something different but it was nice, absolutely nice.

“The wind was difficult, as a goalkeeper. We need to cool down the whole situation; let’s play football, let’s work on our weaknesses and use our strength and then everything will be good.”

The wounds from Kiev won’t have healed already, which is why it was a stunning gesture from the Liverpool fans.

The Merseysiders still undoubtedly need a new goalkeeper, but at least Karius can rebuild his confidence on the back of seeing how the supporters treated him yesterday.
