Liverpool are preparing for a cup tie with Chelsea on Wednesday.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed his goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, while also confirming he will get his first appearance of the season in midweek.
The 30-year-old will start in goal for the Merseyside club in the Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night.
He has been a fringe player so far this season and is stuck behind number one option Alisson Becker, who has been impressive since he joined in the summer from Roma.
The Belgium international is set to be restricted to minutes in the domestic competitions only and will hope to make a positive impact against Chelsea.
Klopp has explained that Mignolet has been “brilliant” since he had the setback of seeing a summer exit blocked by Liverpool, as he is the senior second-choice goalkeeper.
“He has been brilliant. Yes, it was how you can imagine it. Simon would have been ready to go to another club to be number one wherever in the world, but we couldn’t do it. Since then he has been brilliant. He deserves the game tomorrow,” Klopp said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
Mignolet has enjoyed a five-year spell with Liverpool since joining from Sunderland, but Klopp revealed he would have liked to have played first-team football elsewhere this season.
The 6ft 3in shot-stopper has remained on the books at the club and it was Loris Karius that was offloaded on loan after his epic blunder in the Champions League final.
