Shaqiri scored for Liverpool in their 7-2 victory over Lincoln City away from home in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.
The Switzerland international winger scored from a brilliant free kick, and he showed a lot of energy and drive despite playing in an unfamiliar role in midfield.
Klopp has spoken highly of the 28-year-old, and he has admitted that it was his fault that he substituted him, thinking that the former Bayern Munich man had injured himself.
Klopp said about Shaqiri, as quoted in Goal.com: “First of all it was a super game; a super game from Shaq in a quite, I’m not sure, unfamiliar position – slightly deeper in midfield. He did it really, really well.
“It was my fault [he was substituted] – he was completely fine, he twisted his ankle slightly but it was absolutely nothing. He touched it twice and I thought it was his calf, but it is nothing. I think it was anyway good to take him off then, but he played a really, really good game.
“The set-pieces were outstanding – the free-kick he scored with, what a goal that was! There is no doubt about Shaq’s quality, there was never [any doubt] and in the moment everything looks really, really good, it looks promising and we will see.”
Does Xherdan Shaqiri have a future at Liverpool?
Shaqiri has been essentially a squad player at Liverpool since he moved to Anfield in 2018.
According to WhoScored, Shaqiri scored one goal in 182 minutes of Premier League football for Liverpool last season, while in 2018-19, he scored six goals and provided three assists in 1059 minutes of league football.
With Diogo Jota having been signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window, it is going to be even tougher for the winger to play regularly for the Reds’ first team this season.
