Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted to Sky Sports, during their live coverage of the Carabao Cup, that he was surprised when Curtis Jones stepped up to take the deciding penalty for his side.

Liverpool beat Arsenal on spot kicks yesterday, with Jones showing great nerve to take the last penalty.

The youngster showed impressive levels of maturity to take on such responsibility.

But Klopp admits that he was not expecting Jones to step up and take the deciding shot from 12 yards.

“Jones, it was not my decision in the end for him to take the last penalty,” Klopp said. “When I saw the list Origi was the taker of the last one and they changed it obviously!”

Jones was actually left on the bench at the start of the match, but came on to make a great impression last night.

The academy graduate helped Liverpool pick up a 5-5 draw in normal time, in one of the most entertaining games of the season so far.

Jones managed to claim an assist for Divock Origi, before going on to score from the spot.

Liverpool’s reward for beating Arsenal is a quarter-final tie with Aston Villa.
