Jose Mourinho brutally hit back at Jurgen Klopp and claimed that he is only unhappy with Manchester United’s tactics on Sunday because he has never won at Old Trafford during his time as Liverpool manager.

After Liverpool secured a 1-1 draw against their bitter rivals at Old Trafford, Klopp was critical of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tactics by claiming that all United did during the game was to ‘defend’ his side.

It was a pretty lacklustre performance from Liverpool, who needed a late equalising goal from substitute Adam Lallana to walk away with a point, as VAR added a lot of drama to the first half.

Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League (20/10/2019 at 7:00 pm), Klopp first shared his thoughts on United, and when his post-match interview finished, Mourinho had a pop at the German whilst doing his punditry work.

“It’s not about confidence [in regards to Liverpool’s performance],” Klopp told Sky Sports.“It was more about momentum. They had it because they were purely here today to defend us.

“When you set up a team like Man United, with the quality they have and make them just defending this then we have the ball then James is going then Rashford is going. That’s really difficult. We should have done much better. It’s obviously the easier thing to do to play like this [just defend] and then you [Liverpool] have to pass through these lines.”

Mourinho was asked what he thought about Klopp suggesting that all Man Utd have done since he joined Liverpool is to defend against the Reds, the Portuguese said:

“That’s because they never beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. I don’t think he liked the menu. He likes meat and you got fish. And he was not happy. They are much better against teams that given then chances and transition and counter-attack.”

Mourinho was in the Old Trafford dugout prior to Solskjaer, who has had to deal with the troubles that faced the three-time Premier League winner when he was at the club.

Games between Liverpool and Manchester United in recent seasons have been pretty scrappy and low of quality on the day, as this one proved.

Whilst United have ended Liverpool’s winning run, they haven’t ended their unbeaten run, which has, at this moment in time, seen them open up a six-point lead on Manchester City in the table.
