According to reports, Liverpool are interested in signing Sander Berge from Sheffield United this summer.
With Georginio Wijnaldum looking set to depart Anfield at the end of the season, the Reds certainly need midfield reinforcements, and Berge is reportedly a name on their list.
Now, it would be very easy to write this off as a questionable signing. After all, Berge plays for a Sheffield United side that look set to go down as one of the worst in Premier League history, and he’s really not done all that much this season.
However, Liverpool ought to know better than any other club that signing talent from a lowly side can be incredibly lucrative.
Indeed, when you look at Liverpool’s squad, you have the likes of Wijnaldum, Andy Robertson, Xherdan Shaqiri and even Harvey Elliott who were signed from relegated teams.
It would be hard to describe any of the aforementioned players as bad signings, and in Robertson’s case, he’s gone on to become arguably one of the best players in the world in his position.

Now, we’re not going to claim that Berge will be one of the best midfielders in the world in the near future, that would be way too bold of a claim, but he could be a top-level talent one day.
He’s only 23 years old, and it’s worth noting that he has previously drawn the interest of both Chelsea and Napoli, and when he was at Genk he was turning heads in the Champions League.
There’s no reason why Berge couldn’t follow in Robertson’s footsteps by becoming a Liverpool star after joining from a relegated club, and with the big Norwegian reportedly being available for just £22.2m this summer, this may be a deal Liverpool want to get over the line.
