Lazar Markovic finally left Liverpool a little earlier this week.
Jurgen Klopp has told a press conference on Liverpool’s YouTube channel that he is delighted for Lazar Markovic.
The 24-year-old sealed a late deadline-day move to Fulham, joining on a free transfer [BBC Sport] after Klopp had made it clear that he was not in his long-term Liverpool plans.
Markovic, a £20 million signing during Brendan Rodgers’s stint at Anfield [Football 365], hasn’t kicked a ball for the Reds since May 2015, and endured unsuccessful loan spells at Fenerbahce, Sporting, Hull and Anderlecht.
But Klopp says that joining the Londoners represents a ‘brilliant’ move for the Serbian midfielder, whom he hopes can rebuild his career.
He told a press conference on Liverpool’s YouTube channel, when asked about the move: “For him it’s brilliant. It must’ve been unbelievably difficult for him. Lazar knew for a long time what our plans were and for various reasons transfers didn’t work out.
“Now he can go to Fulham and show his potential again. I’m happy for him. He’s a good lad, a really good footballer and hopefully it’ll work out for him.”
Markovic was considered hot property when Rodgers brought him to Liverpool in 2014, but 19 Premier League appearances in nearly five years illustrates that he has been something of a flop, certainly when you consider his transfer fee.
Fulham visit Crystal Palace today but it remains to be seen whether Markovic is included in the travelling squad.
He hasn’t played a senior game since last July and although he has been turning out for the reserves as of late, he might not be fit enough for first-team games just yet.
