According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of signing Benfica striker Carlos Vinicius on loan.

Finally, it looks like Tottenham are getting the striker they so desperately need. Jose Mourinho has spoken publicly on a number of occasions about his desire to bring in real competition for Harry Kane up top.

Ahead of tonight’s Europa League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa, Tottenham have been working on a deal for Vinicius, and look to have secured him on loan.

It’s claimed that the deal will include a permanent option for £36million, should the Brazilian hitman impress under Jose Mourinho.

This seems pretty low-risk; if Vinicius doesn’t impress, then Spurs can send him back to Benfica without giving up all that much, though it will of course send Tottenham back to the drawing board.

If he impresses though, Spurs could have landed themselves a bargain. That’s because Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira told Jornal de Noticias in June that he had rejected an offer of €60million (£54.5million) for Vinicius.

He added that Vinicius would only be leaving for €100million (£91million) due to a release clause in his contract, and believed that figure would have been paid if it wasn’t for the global pandemic.

Fast forward four months, and Tottenham appear to have landed Vinicius on loan with a view to paying just £36million for him in the future, which is a huge drop from the prices Vieira was talking about in June.

Having hit 24 goals and 13 assists last season, Vinicius will join Tottenham off the back of great goalscoring form – and the figures involved should leave Spurs fans feeling that Daniel Levy has struck a bargain deal.
