Aston Villa recorded their fifth win on the bounce when they beat Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
Juan Pablo Angel stated on Twitter that he never imagined in his ‘wildest dreams’ that he would have expected such a ‘warm welcome’ from the Aston Villa fans.
The former striker returned to Villa Park on Saturday, alongside ex-defender Martin Laursen, to watch the team beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 and record their fifth win on the bounce in their race for promotion.
During the half-time break, he was paraded around the pitch with all corners of the ground, especially the Holte End, signing his name out loud.
After Dean Smith’s side increased their chances of finishing in the play-off places this season, Angel sent this message to the club’s fans about his return on his personal Twitter account.
At the start of the 21st century, then-Villa manager John Gregory signed Angel from River Plate and the hairband-wearing-striker didn’t take long to become a fan favourite.
He was a focal point in a Villa team that was vying for Europe and he was known to score some spectacular goals during his time in B6.
The Colombian left Villa Park in 2007 when Martin O’Neill joined the club, with the Northern Irishman replacing him with what would turn out to be another Holte End favourite, John Carew.
Nonetheless, during Angel’s time at Villa, they were always a Premier League club, but since then they have fallen down to the second tier of English football.
They have a chance of ending their near three-year absence from England’s top flight, but, at first, they will have to finish in the top six if they want to achieve that.
