The opening of Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium was a glorious event for all associated with the club.

One player though ended up in a worse position than when the night began. That is Juan Foyth, who didn’t even play.

Foyth has slipped back down the pecking order in 2019 after appearing to make progress.

The 21-year-old’s last Premier League game ended in defeat to Burnley and he has not been picked since.

On Wednesday night against Crystal Palace, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino chose to line up with three central defenders.

Rather than Foyth, Pochettino chose to select Ben Davies in the role.

Davies has an edge because he can shift to left-back too, giving Spurs greater flexibility, while Danny Rose moved into a wing-back position.

It worked out well, with Davies performing strongly as Tottenham kept a clean sheet.

It is a role Davies is used to with Wales and more opportunities are likely to be forthcoming.

With Davinson Sanchez in the mix too, Foyth has now fallen back down the pecking order, even if Toby Alderweireld leaves.

This isn’t to say Foyth can’t rise up and reclaim his place, but if Davies is going to shift to centre-back more regularly, his task has got a lot harder.
