Tottenham Hotspur’s Juan Foyth is in the Top 60 for the Golden Boy award.
Tottenham Hotspur fans may not have seen much of defender Juan Foyth since his move to the club last summer, but it’s clear that the Argentinian is highly regarded inside and outside of the club.
Spurs swooped to land defender Foyth from Estudiantes in an £8million deal last summer (The Daily Mail), with Mauricio Pochettino using his knowledge of Argentinian football to land the youngster.
Last season, Foyth didn’t make a single Premier League appearance, playing eight games in total, with the majority of them coming in the FA Cup as Pochettino took it slowly with him in his first season in England.
Foyth has missed the start of the new season through injury, but none of that has stopped him from being named in the top 60 candidates for the Golden Boy award, as reported by The Mirror.
The list has been cut from 100 to 60, but Foyth remains in the running, and whilst he won’t win the award, he is at least being recognised for being such an impressive young talent.
The 20-year-old looks set for a huge future, but even with his nomination and continued spot in the running for the award, it may be another season in the shadows for Foyth.
Spurs didn’t sell defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, and even with Cameron Carter-Vickers out on loan, Pochettino still has Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen at his disposal too.
Foyth is therefore set to be fourth choice at best for Spurs this term, but when his chance comes, he must be ready to grasp it – and justify why Pochettino spent £8million on him when he was relatively unknown a year ago, and why he is in the running for such a major award.
