Tottenham Hotspur edged out the French giants to sign Juan Foyth this summer.
Juan Foyth has told Four Four Two that the prospect of regular football played a big factor in his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur.
The 19-year-old defender joined Spurs in an £8 million deal from Estudiantes last month, with ESPN reporting that Tottenham beat out Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.
ESPN also reported that Pochettino personally phoned his fellow Argentine in a move believed to have ended the youngster’s inclination to join the big-spending Ligue 1 side.
And now, Foyth has opened up on what the Lilywhites manager told him during that exchange.
“It’s a club that bets on the young and I think I’m going to have a chance to play,” he told Four Four Two.
“I also spoke with Mauricio Pochettino and I liked what he said. It’s what helped me decide that Tottenham was the right place to continue my career.
“He told me to go train and, if I deserved it, that I would play. He also told me what the club was like and what his work ethic was.”
Foyth is poised to make his Tottenham debut tonight as Barnsley visit Wembley in a third-round League Cup clash.
He certainly seems like a man with lofty ambitions and surely he won’t be content to be a Carabao Cup player for the North Londoners this season.
But, at the moment, that’s about as good as it’s going to get for Foyth, who is unlikely to dislodge any of Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen or Toby Alderweirled in Pochettino’s three-man defence yet.
