Tottenham Hotspur may have to do without Toby Alderweireld next campaign.
With Toby Alderweireld’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur looking more and more inevitable, it could be that Juan Foyth has a big role to play next season.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Spurs are set to step away from contract talks with Alderweireld, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side now prepared to sell him.
That would be a huge blow for Spurs, as Alderweireld is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
However, it may just provide Foyth with a route into Pochettino’s first-team.
Foyth was brought to Spurs last summer in a £10 million transfer, and he has been used sparingly in his first season in English football.
It is clear that the youngster needs to bulk up, but on every appearance he has made for Tottenham, he has caught the eye.
Foyth’s ability in possession means that he fits into Spurs’ side well, and he could compliment Davinson Sanchez well.
Sanchez offers a great deal of pace and power, but he isn’t quite as comfortable on the ball as the likes of Foyth or Jan Vertonghen.
And if Tottenham do play with three at the back next season, it would not be a major surprise to see Vertonghen accompanying both Foyth and Sanchez at the back, if Alderweireld does move on.
