The Liverpool ace has been out of action for around seven weeks with a back injury.

Jurgen Klopp, Manager of Liverpool looks on during a training session on April 9, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp addressed the media yesterday, ahead of his side’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and provided a fitness update on Emre Can, sharing what needs to happen if the German is to return in time for the Champions League final, as quoted by the club’s official website.

The 24-year-old has not played for the Reds since March after injuring his back during his side’s 5-0 win over Watford, but somewhat surprisingly, Klopp’s men have coped just fine without him.

He is still a fantastic player, and very important to the way in which Liverpool operate, however, and having him back involved with the first team ahead of the Champions League final will be a major boost for the Merseyside outfit.

Klopp spoke to reporters yesterday, and responded when asked whether the Germany international is close to returning to action, as quoted by the club’s official website:

Jurgen Klopp, Manager of Liverpool speaks with the media during a press conference at Anfield on April 23, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

“We are in contact with Emre. An important day is next Monday and then we can make the decision if he starts training with us or not immediately. It would only be good news for the final, probably not for the last game of the season. I don’t know exactly what he did but it’s something to do with a bone in his back. He couldn’t really move properly. Now it looks like he can do pretty much everything normal. But somebody needs to tell him that it’s really fine. That would be good news for us.”

Since Can has been on the sidelines, James Milner has been quite simply sensational, and it could be argued that the German would not even get into Klopp’s starting XI for the Champions League final if he was fully fit.

A lot can happen between now and May 26th, however, and if the 24-year-old proves that he is ready for Kyiv, Klopp will have a serious selection headache.
