Southampton welcome Inter Milan to St Mary’s in the Europa League.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse hopes the Saints fans can help them get over the line against Inter Milan, speaking ahead of the Europa League tie, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

Having lost the reverse fixture at the San Siro 1-0, the match at St Mary’s is another landmark in the history of Southampton, whose remarkable resurgence from League One will see them welcome three-time Champions League winners Inter Milan to the South coast.

The importance of the fixture is not lost on Ward-Prowse, who wants the fans to help the players as they continue to cheer on the Saints during this incredible journey.

“The fans stuck with the club through thick and thin, through the bad times and these are the good times now,” Ward-Prowse told the Daily Mail.

“A few of them would have been travelling to League One fixtures, and now we are hosting Inter Milan in the Europa League. We have a chance to qualify and hopefully they can get behind us to see us over the line.”

Seven years ago, Southampton were relegated to League One, the third tier of English football. They would start the 2009/10 season with -10 points.

After clawing their way back up the divisions and into the Premier League, the Saints have become one of the top teams in England, despite countless players and managers leaving the club.

One thing that has been a constant is the fans, and those that watched the club scrapping in League One will savour the chance to see their team go toe-to-toe with a European giant like Inter Milan.
