Alfie Mawson made his Swansea City debut in the 0-0 draw with Watford.
Swansea City youngster Alfie Mawson has told Sky Sports he wants to be the leader the Swans need having lost captain Ashley Williams in the summer.
The Wales skipper moved to Ronald Koeman’s Everton, where he has enjoyed a strong start as a Toffee, while Swansea have struggled without the inspirational figure at the club.
Mawson joined the Welsh club in the summer from Barnsley, and made his first appearance for the Swans in the 0-0 draw with Watford, which was their first clean sheet since the opening day of the season.
With new boss Bob Bradley keen to tighten up his defence, Mawson was brought in, and the centre-back hopes he can be the leader Swansea need, following in the footsteps of Williams.
“I’d like to have the same impact he had when he came in here,” Mawson told Sky Sports.
“Not so much football-wise, but being a leader. That’s what some say is missing at this club because Ashley left a big hole in that respect.
“If I can take on that role I’m happy to do so.”
The 22-year-old was handed a tough challenge on his first Premier League appearance, tasked with handling the powerful Troy Deeney, but Mawson was able to keep him and any other Watford player off the score sheet, with Swansea picking up a point; their first under their new manager.
Bradley has shown faith in the youngster already, and Mawson will hope he is handed more chances to show he can be the leader at the back that Swansea need now they no longer have Williams to rely on.
