Summer signing Donald Love scored the only goal in Sunderland Under-23s 1-0 victory over Hartlepool United in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The defender moved to Wearside as part of a double deal including Paddy McNair from Manchester United, but neither have found success in the Premier League at their new home.
However, after McNair scored twice in Sunderland’s victory in the EFL Cup at QPR and Love netted the winner against Hartlepool for the Under-23s, the pair have found a knack of scoring in cup competitions in red and white.
21-year-old Love lost his place in David Moyes’ starting XI when Javi Manquillo arrived on loan, so the Checkatrade Trophy provided the youngster with an opportunity to get some game time against League Two opposition; an opportunity which he took.
