Newcastle United beat Preston North End 6-0 in the EFL Cup.

Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame was full of praise for his teammate Aleksandar Mitrovic following the 6-0 thrashing of Preston North End and he explained why to nufc.co.uk.

The Serbian striker bagged two goals on his first Newcastle start since the Magpies’ 6-0 win over QPR and Diame, who also scored twice against Preston, was impressed with the youngster’s efforts.

“There had been some great work from Mitro,” Diame told nufc.co.uk.

“He did a great job tonight and I hope we’re just going stay like this and keep going.”

The former Hull City man has had a rough start to life on Tyneside and has hardly become a fan favourite, which is an area where Mitrovic thrives. The 22-year-old is a hero to the Newcastle fans and he gives the supporters a boost whenever he is on the pitch.

While Diame has appeared more times this season and is preferred by manager Rafael Benitez, the Senegal international could learn a lot from Mitrovic, who has captured the hearts of the Toon Army since joining last summer.

The forward was fantastic in the 6-0 demolition, and could have grabbed a hat-trick. Mitrovic also linked up with Diame brilliantly with the score at 1-0, only for the midfielder to skew an effort wide where it looked easier to score.

Mitrovic may have impressed Diame, but it is Benitez who he needs to really impress, with the boss giving him limited opportunities so far this season.
