The 24-year-old began the goal glut after 12 minutes, when his strike clattered off Steven Caulker and past the despairing Alex Smithies, but better was to come.

Ayoze Perez doubled the Magpies’ lead after half an hour, before Shelvey scored the goal of the game three minutes into the second half.
Perez laid the ball back to Newcastle’s number 12, who took one touch before curling the ball into the top corner, sending the travelling Geordies wild.
Ciaran Clark scored Newcastle’s fourth, with Aleksandar Mitrovic making it five. Grant Hanley bagged Newcastle sixth and final goal, but everyone was talking about Shelvey’s strike after the final whistle.

The result sees Newcastle close the gap at the top to one point, after Huddersfield were beaten 1-0 by Brighton.
Rafael Benitez’s side have now won five Championship games in a row, scoring 15 goals and only conceding one.
