Rafael Benitez’s side took the league in first half injury time through Ayoze Perez, scoring his first goal of the season.
The Spanish forward made it 2-0 in the 47th minute after Dwight Gayle selflessly picked out Perez who passed the ball into the empty net to grab his and Newcastle’s second.
Although the result was comfortable, it came at a price, as the Magpies suffered a host of injuries.
Perez, Gayle and the returning Aleksandar Mitrovic suffered head injuries, while Rolando Aarons was stretchered off in the first half.
There was also a scare for defender Grant Hanley, who appeared to be suffering a groin problem.
Newcastle did enough to get past their League Two opponents, but they will be hoping that injuries don’t dent their league aspirations, as they host Championship rivals Brighton on Saturday evening.
