Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice as Serbia beat Austria 3-2 in World Cup qualifying.
The 22-year-old’s neat finish put the home side in front after six minutes, but they only held on to that lead for nine minutes, with Marcel Sabitzer grabbing an equaliser for Austria.
Serbia went ahead again in the 23 minute when Mitrovic got his second, powering a header past Ramazan Ozcan.
Marc Janko made it 2-2 just after the hour mark, but the tie was settled in the 74th minute when Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic capped off an impressive individual performance with a goal that ended up being the winner, having set up both of Mitrovic’s strikes in the first half.
The goals from Mitrovic will be welcome news for Newcastle fans, who have only seen their forward score once this season, having touted him to do well in the Championship this season.
However, limited opportunities for the youngster has meant a limited impact from ‘Mitro’, whose crowning moment so far this campaign was his celebrations against Norwich.
