Newcastle United are still believed to be on the look-out for a winger.
Despite already making eight signings, Newcastle United are still thought to be in the market for more players.
One area that manager Rafael Benitez still needs to strengthen is out wide, with Matt Ritchie and Rolando Aarons the only out-and-out wingers currently in the Newcastle first team squad picture.
Following a failed attempt to bring in one of the Championship’s top wingers in Anthony Knockaert from Brighton, Newcastle are yet to find an alternative.
With three weeks left of the transfer window, here are five wide midfielders that Newcastle could consider in their search for reinforcement.
Johnny Russell
Arriving at Derby County as a striker, Johnny Russell has been used out wide during the majority of his time at iPro Stadium.
The Scot netted nine times in the Championship last season, and would add a goal threat to a Newcastle side that looked like it had little chance of scoring on Friday night against Fulham.
Signing a divisional rival could be a stumbling block, but it has not stopped Benitez already this summer, who has added Ciaran Clark and Grant Hanley from Aston Villa and Blackburn respectively.
Stuart Dallas
Another Championship player that Newcastle could turn to is Leeds’ Stuart Dallas.
The Northern Irish winger provided six assists last season as well as five goals. Dallas put 192 crosses in over 45 appearances, something that was missing from Newcastle’s play last season – one of the reasons target man Aleksandar Mitrovic failed to live up to expectations.
Dallas is divisional rival like Russell, but may jump at the chance to join Newcastle, who most expect to challenge for promotion (unlike his current club).
Sheyi Ojo
The loan market is also an option for Benitez. With this in mind, Sheyi Ojo could be a player that may tempt the Spaniard.
Liverpool recently signed Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle, and an approach for youngster Ojo could be met with open arms.
The 19-year-old spent loan spells at Wigan and Wolves last season, as well as being handed a first Premier League start by manager Jurgen Klopp. With all of the attacking talent available to Liverpool, Ojo may have to move away from Anfield to gain experience, and Newcastle could be the ideal destination.
Bakary Sako
Despite only spending one year at Crystal Palace, Bakary Sako is reportedly set to leave Selhurst Park this summer, after being forced down the pecking order by ex-Newcastle winger Andros Townsend.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to previous club Wolves, for whom he recently spent three seasons. During Sako’s last season in the Championship with Wolves, the Mali winger scored 15 goals and supplied seven assists.
Making 41 appearances in 2014/15, Sako was involved in a goal more than every other game.
Fernando Forestieri
One of the best players in the Championship, bringing Fernando Forestieri to St James’ Park would really lay down a marker.
The Italian has already shown his worth to Sheffield Wednesday this season, scoring the winner against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Forestieri often plays behind the striker, but can also be deadly out wide when cutting inside onto his right foot, as Villa found out far too often at Hillsborough.
But Wednesday are also going in search of promotion, and it would take a big offer from Newcastle to get the club’s star player.
The Magpies are lacking a creative spark, and Wednesday’s number 45 could provide that.
