The Rams had only one point to their and name before kick off after drawing with Brighton on the opening day before losing to Barnsley on Saturday.
It was a late show for Pearson’s side, who had left back Craig Forsyth to thank after he headed home Will Hughes’ cross in the 87th minute.
Forsyth’s header was Derby’s first goal of the season, and fans will be hoping that the goal kick-starts Pearson’s reign in charge of the club, who are expected to challenge for promotion.
Derby’s victory lifts them up to 14th in the Championship, whose next game is on Saturday at home to 11th placed Aston Villa, who are only above on goal difference.
Defeat for Preston makes it three consecutive losses and leaves them second from bottom.
