Sheffield Wednesday moved up to seventh with a huge win over Huddersfield Town.
After coming so close to promotion last season, Carlos Carvalhal had insisted his Sheffield Wednesday side must manage their expectations during an interview in The Star.
The Owls moved up to seventh with a fantastic 1-0 win over former league leaders Huddersfield, who suffered their first loss at home this season courtesy of a Fernando Forestieri penalty.
Huddersfield had not even dropped a point at the John Smith’s Stadium this season, so victory could be a huge momentum boost for Wednesday, but Carvalhal is not getting carried away.
“It is a hard competition; it is a marathon,” Carvalhal told The Star. “The teams that are more balanced, have their feet on the floor and understand the competition are the ones who can do really well.
“We did very well last season and we are trying to manage expectations which can sometimes be a problem in this environment.”
Wednesday are now six points off top spot, and are only outside of the play-offs on goal difference. Last year’s beaten play-off finalists were tipped for another promotion challenge this season, especially after some strong recruitment in the summer and they are starting to climb up the table.
While it was heartbreaking for the Owls to come so close last season, Carvalhal’s side have shown they are still going to compete this year, even with the increased quality in the division.
If they can find some consistency in their performances and go on a run of good results, they could join front runners Norwich and Newcastle, who have set the pace after the opening 12 games.
