Newcastle United made it three wins on the bounce with a 3-1 win over Brentford, and yet again Jonjo Shelvey was at the heart of everything good about the Magpies going forward.

As well as doing his defensive duties, the 24-year-old dominated the centre of the park, dictating the play, and his stats show how instrumental he was in the victory against the Bees.

The midfielder was involved in all three of Newcastle’s goals, directly setting up Ciaran Clark’s header with a glorious cross into the box, and allowing Dwight Gayle to grab his second of the game, running beyond the defence before neatly pulling the ball back across the face of goal for Newcastle’s number nine to tap in.

No one created more chances than Shelvey on Saturday, and no one got on the ball more. The England international touched the ball 92 times, 19 more times than Vurnon Anita who had the second most.

His 77 passes were unrivalled, and a passing accuracy of 86% was only topped by Christian Atsu and Grant Hanley, with both players not completing 90 minutes in black and white.

Shelvey was tenacious in midfield, winning four tackles.

It was another sensational performance from Shelvey, and he is one of the only players for Newcastle who appears to be undroppable. The play-maker is in a class of his own in the Championship, standing head and shoulders above the rest.

If Player of the Season was awarded right now, surely it could not go to anyone but Shelvey.

However, there was a negative aspect of his performance, performing a ‘dab’ after Gayle’s second goal, which is bordering on criminal. Stick to the passing, Jonjo.
